June is Cataract Awareness Month!
Taking care of your eyes and vision is a must. Unfortunately, eye health is something that a lot of people take for granted—that is, until they begin to experience eye and vision problems. One of the most common ocular conditions of people over the age of 40 is that of cataracts.
Here at Hobson Eye Associates, cataracts are just one of many ocular conditions that we diagnose and treat.
What Are Cataracts?
Cataracts is a condition where the eye's natural lens becomes clouded or opaque. Over time, this can result in extremely blurred vision. The lens of the eye is located behind the pupil and iris; over time (or as a result of injury), this layer of tissue can change or become damaged. Unfortunately, cataracts are the main cause of vision loss in adults over the age of 40.
Common Signs of Cataracts
There are many warning signs you can be on the lookout for when it comes to cataracts. One of the main "red flags" that people experience is that of clouded or blurred vision. However, others may also experience difficulty seeing at night, sensitivity to light and glare, and inexplicable deterioration of eyesight.
Other symptoms to watch out for include seeing "halos" or rings around bright lights and double vision (especially in one eye).
How to Protect Yourself
While some cases of cataracts are genetic, there are some steps that anybody can take to reduce their risk of developing this ocular condition.
Perhaps the best thing you can do to protect yourself is to simply schedule annual eye exams. A routine eye exam can reveal early signs of cataracts, so it may be possible to treat them before they cause any significant damage. Furthermore, quitting smoking, reducing alcohol consumption, and wearing sunglasses while outdoors can reduce your risk.
Studies have also found that those who maintain a healthy weight and have a diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables may be less likely to develop cataracts down the road.
