Dry Eye Syndrome: Symptoms, Causes And How It Is Treated

Dry eye happens to all of us occasionally, particularly in smoky or windy conditions. When our eyes feel scratchy and uncomfortable we blink rapidly, flooding our eyes with cleansing tears and the irritation is gone. If you suffer from Dry Eye Syndrome, or chronic dry eye though, relief never comes no matter how many times you blink.

Dry eye is a condition where a problem occurs with the way your body produces the tear film that lubricates and protects your eyes. A healthy quantity and quality of tears are necessary to maintain your eye health; tears wash away irritants and bacteria and protect your corneas from painful abrasions that can damage your vision.

Signs and Symptoms of Dry Eye

  • Redness
  • Itchiness
  • Watery eyes
  • Blurred vision
  • Eye Fatigue
  • Sensitivity to bright light

Causes of Dry Eye:

  • Age- our tear production capability decreases as we age
  • Medical conditions- Lupus, MS, thyroid disorders and Diabetes manifest in eye problems
  • Medications- Antihistamines and high blood pressure meds can lead to dry eye
  • Work Environment- windy, smoky or dry air, prolonged computer use, overhead fans

How is Chronic Dry Eye Diagnosed and Treated?

Your optometrist will perform a comprehensive eye examination, which will include asking pertinent questions about your symptoms, overall health, medications you take and family history.

Your optometrist will examine your visual acuity, perform eye movement tests, refraction and thoroughly examine your eyes and eye structures.

Based on the findings from the above, your optometrist in Kennesaw GA may then perform specific tests to evaluate the extent of your dry eye. (i.e.: Schirmer’s, Tear Break Up Time (TBUT), tear assessment or Interferometry)

Once your optometrist has determined the cause and extent of your dry eye, he will develop a tailored treatment plan specific to your needs. The focus will be to provide relief of your symptoms, protection for your eyes and either add tears or conserve the tears that you do produce.

Treatment options may include:

  • Prescription eye drops
  • Lifestyle change recommendations
  • Antibiotics for irritating bacteria in the eye
  • At-home therapy (warm compresses, increasing room humidity, etc.)
  • Workplace adjustments (lighting or computer brightness, font size, distance, etc)
