Kennesaw Senior Eye Care from Hobson Eye Associates

Kennesaw eyexams for seniors

With more than 40 years of service, Hobson Eye Associates is here for all your Kennesaw senior eye care needs. It's no secret that your risk for eye and vision problems increases as you age, and those aged 60 and older are encouraged to stay diligent about their ocular health and wellness. Here in our office, we provide dedicated senior eye exams that help detect signs of eye conditions and diseases and protect your eye and vision health.

The Importance of Kennesaw Eye Exams for Seniors

Just as regular check-ups with your primary care physician are important, so are regular Kennesaw eye exams for seniors. Specifically, we recommend comprehensive eye and vision exams for those aged 60 and older at least once per year with our eye doctors. For starters, regular eye exams will ensure that you always have an up-to-date vision prescription, so you can see as clearly as possible. Even if you haven't noticed any major changes in your own vision, there's a good chance that your prescription has changed over the past year—and continuing to wear the wrong prescription lenses can be further damaging to your eyes.

Regular eye exams also provide our eye doctors with the opportunity to look for signs of potential eye conditions and diseases, which increases chances for early detection. The earlier many eye problems are detected, the greater our chances of success in treatment.

Common Senior Eye Health Issues

Unfortunately, there are many eye conditions and ocular diseases that become increasingly common as a person ages. One of the most common eye health issues our eye doctors see in seniors, for example, is that of glaucoma. This occurs when excessive pressure builds up in the eyes and presses against the optic nerve. This, in turn, can result in gradual loss of vision. Other common eye health issues among seniors include:

  • Cataracts
  • Macular degeneration
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Refractive errors

By scheduling an annual eye exam, you can have an experienced and skilled eye doctor check your eyes for any signs of these problems. Furthermore, some "red flags" spotted during an eye exam could be indicative of other health problems, such as diabetes or high cholesterol.

What to Expect From a Senior Eye Exam

When you come in for a senior eye exam at Hobson Eye Associates, we'll start by giving you an opportunity to let us know about any changes or problems you've noticed since your last exam. From there, we'll begin our comprehensive eye exam that involves testing for visual acuity, peripheral and directional vision, and color blindness. We'll also check to ensure that your pupils are responding to light as they should be, and that the eyelids are healthy and functioning properly.

A senior eye exam will also involve measuring fluid pressure in the eye (to check for signs of glaucoma), as well as an examination of the inside and back of the eye. This will require dilation through the use of eye drops, so you may need to have a friend or family member drive you home.
