Glaucoma Treatment with our Kennesaw Optometrist

Kennesaw Optometrist treating patient with Glaucoma

The second leading cause of blindness in the world, Glaucoma primarily affects older adults, although everyone is at risk of the disease.  In the most common type of glaucoma, there are rarely noticeable symptoms until much of your vision is irreversibly lost. Your optometrists at Hobson Eye Clinic here in Kennesaw GA understand that early diagnosis of the disease provides the best chance of preserving your vision.

Types of Glaucoma

Glaucoma is the result of intraocular pressure (IOP) in the anterior chamber of your eye.  This chamber is filled with fluid that normally drains out through special channels. In glaucoma, the fluid no longer drains and pressure builds within the eye, damaging the optic nerve.

  • Primary Open-angle Glaucoma: also called ‘chronic glaucoma' develops slowly; there are rarely symptoms until much of your vision is permanently gone.
  • Angle-closure Glaucoma: Much less common, this occurs when the drainage channels suddenly close. There is immediate intraocular pressure with acute eye pain and vision loss.
  • Secondary Glaucoma: This form of the disease can result from other medical conditions like Diabetes or Hypertension.

Symptoms of Glaucoma:

Call your eye doctor if you are experiencing any of the following:

  • Blurred vision
  • Eye Pain
  • Tunnel vision
  • Vision loss- particularly gradual loss of your peripheral vision
  • Hazy look to the eye

Who Is At Risk?

We are all at risk for the disease, which is why regular comprehensive eye exams are so important. Your risk increases if any of the following apply to you:

  • A family history of glaucoma- open-angle glaucoma is hereditary
  • Diabetes
  • Age over 60
  • Hypertension
  • African-American
  • Prednisone or cortisone- tell your optometrist if you have taken these medications

Diagnosis and Treatment of Glaucoma:

Your optometrist will perform a comprehensive eye examination. (Many patients learn they have glaucoma during this thorough exam, long before any symptoms are noticed.) In addition to your vision exam, your optometrist will ask questions about medications you take, about your overall health and pertinent family history.

The initial treatment for glaucoma is usually powerful eye drops; they are intended to reduce IOP by either increasing the flow of fluid from the eye or decreasing the amount of fluid produced by the eye. Some people cannot tolerate these medications, or the eye drops are not effective enough. For those patients, there are a number of surgical options available.
